Topic: “The Image of God,” Genesis 1:26+
“God does not need us or the rest of creation for anything, yet we and the rest of creation can glorify him and bring him joy.” – Wayne Grudem
The Creation – Genesis 1:26-29 NASB1995
“26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”” – Genesis 1:26-29 NASB1995
“How do you define the image of God? Is it Substantive, Functional, or Relational?”
Three (3) ATTRIBUTES ~ God & His Creation, Man
- 1. SUBSTANTIVE view = Identifies the “image” with a specific quality, capacity, or property in us, usually our reason, will, and/or moral capacities, all located in our souls.
- 2. FUNCTIONAL view = Identifies the “image” with what mankind does, specifically in God creating us to have “dominion” over the earth, not in a property we possess.
- 3. RELATIONAL view = Identifies the “image,” not with a specific property in us or our function, but with our ability to relate to God and to others.
KNOW the ORIGINAL – ALL is inspired BY GOD to EQUIP & GLORIFY.
Scripture – 2 Timothy 3:16 NASB1995
“16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16 NASB1995
